NVTC TO RESPOND TO DMVMOVES, APPOINT METRO BOARD MEMBERS
Commission will also approve proposed transit projects for I-395/95
Arlington, Va. - The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission will approve a response to DMVMoves recent discussions, appoint new members of the Metro Board of Directors and be asked to approve 14 proposed projects designed to reduce traffic congestion in the I-395/95 corridor at their monthly meeting this Thursday.
NVTC's Response to DMVMoves
The Commission will be asked to approve a resolution outlining "NVTC Principles in Response to DMVMoves Funding Concepts," which were developed by the joint task force created by Metro and the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments.
NVTC’s resolution calls for supporting the direction of funding concepts that manage Metro’s state of repair backlog, advance rail automation in order to drive cost efficiencies, ensure Metro’s structural funding issues are resolved and allow Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia to identify the appropriate sources to generate sufficient revenue to cover their proportional shares of the Metro funding solution. The resolution also speaks to NVTC’s position on improving coordination across local bus systems.
Metro Board Appointments
The Commission will appoint a new principal and alternate director to the Metro Board of Directors, in keeping with longstanding policy to ensure that NVTC's appointments rotate among Northern Virginia's member jurisdictions.
Walter Alcorn of Fairfax County will join Paul Smedberg as principal director. Mr. Alcorn has served as an alternate since 2020. Matt de Ferranti of Arlington County will join the Board as an alternate, joining Canek Aguirre of Alexandria, who has served as an alternate since 2020. Matthew F. Letourneau of Loudoun County will step down from his appointment to the Metro Board, but remain as NVTC's Secretary-Treasurer and as a member of NVTC's WMATA Committee.
I-395/95 Commuter Choice Proposed Projects
Commissioners will be asked to approve the Program of Projects for I-395/95 Commuter Choice. The program reinvests toll revenues into projects that move more people through Northern Virginia's most traffic-congested corridors.
This year's draft Program of Projects includes 12 potential bus service enhancements for ART, DASH, Fairfax Connector, Metrobus and OmniRide; one new Metrobus route; and the improvement of VRE's Leeland Road Station.
The Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission, which has shared responsibility for the Commuter Choice program, will be asked to adopt the Program of Projects at their meeting held the same evening. It will then be sent to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for its anticipated approval June 24.
