NVTC TO APPROVE CONGESTION RELIEF PROJECTS FOR I-66 CORRIDOR
Commission will also welcome 4 new members
Arlington, Va. - The Northern Virginia Transportation Commission will consider 14 projects designed to reduce traffic congestion and move more people through the I-66 corridor and welcome four new Commissioners at their monthly meeting this Thursday.
I-66 Commuter Choice Proposed Projects
Commissioners will be asked to approve 14 projects designed to reduce traffic congestion and move more people through the I-66 corridor as part of NVTC's Commuter Choice program. The projects, totaling $60.5 million, benefit these local governments and transit agencies:
Arlington County: Funding toward a new entrance at Ballston-MU Metro Station.
Fairfax County: Continuation of 4 Fairfax Connector express bus routes.
Loudoun County: Implementation of 1 new commuter bus route to downtown Washington, D.C. and continuation of 2 existing routes.
Metro: Implementation of 2 new limited-stop service bus routes, including one along the Envision Route 7 corridor.
OmniRide: Implementation of 1 new commuter bus route to downtown Washington, D.C. and continuation of 2 existing routes.
Once approved, the I-66 Commuter Choice Program of Projects will be submitted to the Commonwealth Transportation Board for approval in June.
New NVTC Commissioners and Metro Board Member
Chair Sarah Bagley will swear in four new Commissioners. Sen. Kannan Srinivasan, who represents parts of Loudoun County, will fill the vacancy created when Gov. Abigail Spanberger appointed former Sen. Adam Ebbin to her administration. Del. Kirk McPike, representing parts of Alexandria, will fill the vacancy created when Gov. Spanberger appointed Del. Mark Sickles to her administration. He previously served as an alternate Commissioner and a member of the Alexandria City Council.
Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) Director Mariia Zimmerman, who brings 30 years of transportation industry experience across the public, private and non-profit sectors, will serve as an alternate representing the Commonwealth of Virginia. Director Zimmerman will also address the Commission about her vision for the agency.
Finally, Chair Bagley will swear in Kate Garman Burns. Virginia Secretary of Transportation Nick Donohue appointed Ms. Burns to NVTC and NVTC will also take action to appoint her to the Metro Board of Directors.
